Returned Mail Set-up

The Sending Domain used on an email profile must be configured correctly so that any messages returned to the "From Email Address" are received by the application and actioned accordingly.

Incorrect configuration can reduce email delivery rates or cause returned email to be sent to a mail server outside of the service.

Common Questions

How does this affect delivery rates?

The Returned Mail configuration is imperative for a functional Feedback Loop; the ESP needs to send spam reports back to the application. If the Returned Mail DNS entries are invalid or missing the spam reports will be lost and not actioned, having a negative impact on deliverability.

Some mail servers will attempt to make a connection to the sending server to verify that it is a legitimate mail server rather than a source of spam.

What happens if my Returned Mail is not configured correctly?

In addition to delivery rate issues, an incorrect or missing Returned Mail DNS record will prevent Asynchronous Bounces from being received, creating inaccurate delivery reports.
